Creating Corvus: A Fundraiser for Jo's Top Surgery

Updated: Dec 9, 2021

Welcome to Creating Corvus!

And THANK YOU so very much for supporting my journey home to self.

To my family, friends, and loving community - thank you. Whether we have known each other for a lifetime or are strangers nurturing a shared community, I appreciate you so very much for supporting my fundraiser for top surgery.

Hey! I'm Jo

I am a 26-year old transmasc nonbinary human. I hail from the beautiful coast of Maine and am beginning to create a new community for myself in Philadelphia, PA.

Today marks the one year anniversary of when I legally became Jo Corvus and began living my most authentic life. November 10th, the launch for this fundraiser, is now celebrated as my beloved Rebirthday.

On this one year anniversary, I am taking the first public step in my path towards Top Surgery.

My Path to Top Surgery

Navigating attaining top-surgery as a currently uninsured young-adult has been emotionally and physically draining. I have been working two jobs in order to pay for initial consultations and travel expenses needed to find a surgeon who can accommodate my specific needs. Most surgeons require a substantial deposit to schedule a surgery, and often require full payment at the time of surgery.

Without insurance, out of pocket expenses are estimated to be $10,000, covering the costs for hospitalization, surgery, and anesthesiology. Much out of my comfort zone, I am reaching out to my community for support in funding this necessary procedure in my journey home to self. I am so grateful for the support of each one of you.

I am so excited to finally receive this procedure and walk through the world with my shoulders back and my confidence high. Feeling my body in motion has always been the way I find joy. I cannot wait to finally feel the wind on my chest as I longboard, the swish of a shirt as I dance, and the swirl of the water as I take my first liberated swim.

A note on this website:

I decided to create my own website for my fundraiser, hosted on WIX, in lieu of using a crowdfunding site. Crowdfunding sites take a portion of donation money, up to 7%, which would be $700 of the $10,000 I need! So, in order to stretch donations further and ensure 100% of your money is going to the cause you support, rather than technology gurus, I'll be updating this website myself.

So how does my donation site work? Donations are made directly to me via PayPal or Venmo. The PayPal link and Venmo QR code are found on the home page of this site.

Each day, I will manually update the amount raised and post an updated graph to this site, with a time stamp of the time updated. This updated graph, found under the "Amount Raised" page of this website, will keep everyone informed as we get closer and closer to the fundraising goal.

An Intro to This Blog

Each month, I will upload a new post to summarize the progress of this fundraiser and my journey to top surgery. Posts will consist of a mix of text, video, and image updates covering anything from monetary updates, surgeon decisions, and unexpected barriers.

For anyone interested in tagging along for the journey, there is an option to Subscribe through a form on the Home Page. Subscribers receive blog posts right to their inbox each Wednesday.
